The staff of the school is fortunate to have a very active, co-operative and supportive Parents' Council. The involvement of the Parents' Council is reflected in the equipment that they have provided for the school. Included in this equipment are a computer, photocopier, sports gear, musical instruments, band capes and audio equipment. In the past, they also subsidised the cost of the language tuition on an annual basis. Their generous contributions have enhanced every aspect of school life in Barefield N. S. The members of the Parents' Council contribute to the formulation of all school policy documents in their capacity as partners in education. The role of the Parents' Council is to represent the views of the parents through their parental representatives on the Board of Management. If any new parents should wish to know more about the Parents' Council, they are encouraged to contact either the Chairperson or the Secretary, whose names can be obtained from the school. |

"OVER THE RAINBOW" PLAYSCHOOL Barefield N. S. is very fortunate to have an active and successful playschool. Young children under the age of four years attend the playschool. It is of great benefit to both the children and the infant teacher when they start "real" school as they are already in the school environment and have had the opportunity to mix with other children their own age. These children are lovingly cared for under the capable hands of Mary Collins and Frances Hahessy. RESOURCE TEACHER Since September 2000, Barefield N. S. is privileged to have a resource teacher appointed. Patricia Halpin provides additional support, tuition and encouragement for various children within the school. |

FIONA'S HOMEWORK CLUB Was set up by Fiona Clancy, the Special Needs Assistant Co-ordinator in October 2002. Fiona is a qualified and experienced Montessori teacher and childminder. She also holds a Diploma in Special Education. Fiona has worked as a Special Needs Assistant in Barefield N.S. since 1999. The Homework Club sessions are set in a supervised classroom environment, which enables each child to take responsibility for his/her own homework under the guidance of Fiona. The primary objective is to establish routine. Fionna's Homework Club takes place in the school Monday to Thursday between the hours of 3.05pm to 4.05pm each week. |

PARENT TODDLER GROUP Mothers and fathers bring their babies and toddlers to Barefield N.S. so they can meet up make friends and allow their children to play together. It's an opportunity to have the support of other parents and the reassurance of being part of a group. Pirge's experience as a teacher and mother of two allows her to integrate games and play with genuine social interaction, which helps the children in a myriad of ways. Grandmothers and childminders are more than welcome to bring their children along. The ambience is always positive and uplifting, come along for yourself every Tuesday 9.45am to 11.30am to the GP Room in Barefield. |

RESPECT Pupils should show respect and courtesy to their teachers and to one another at all times. They should always obey the instructions of their teachers. PUNCTUALITY Pupils should be punctual for all their classes. If a pupil is absent or late, a written explanation is required from the parents to the respective teacher. TIDINESS Pupils should pay attention to tidiness of desks, classrooms, halls and the schoolyard. LEAVING SCHOOL DURING SCHOOL HOURS A note from parents is required in cases where a pupil must leave during school hours. (Unless the pupil is collected at the door by a parent). SCHOOL PROPERTY Pupils must respect school property. Accidental damage should be reported immediately by the pupil to the Principal. EFFORT Pupils are expected to give of their best at all times, and to attend to their homework conscientiously. If pupils fail to complete any aspect of their homework, an explanatory note from a parent is required at all times. CONDUCT Pupils are required to conduct themselves in a quiet and orderly manner at all times in the school. An unruly, bad-mannered pupil who does not co-operate reflects discredit on his/her family and shall be subject to disciplinary action within the school. Individual teachers may consider it necessary to draw his / her own classroom rules. In such circumstances, such rules will be explained thoroughly to the pupils and the reasons for their existence. UNIFORMS School uniform is compulsory. |

Discipline is the means by where children are trained in orderliness, good conduct, and the habit of getting the best out of themselves, all of which are essential to the well-being of the school. Any pupil who fails to respond to normal school or class discipline and tends to be a disruptive influence on the class may have sanctions applied to him / her.

The school has had many achievements in its time, due to the great dedication of our staff and students. The following are a list of some of the achievements to date:- CREATIVE WRITING Due to the introduction of computers in our school, the pupils have become very interested in journalism. As a result, the pupils of our school have published numerous books among which was "Our Time To Shine" . We were honoured to have the former President of Ireland, Dr Patrick Hillary in our school to launch the book. This great news was reported in the local papers and as a result, the then Minister of Education, Minister Mary O' Rourke T. D. invited the pupils involved to her office in the Department of Education. In 1992, the renowned author, Alice Taylor, launched three collections of Prose and Poetry by the pupils of Ranganna 111- V11. SCHOOL AROUND THE CORNER Barefield N. S. in 1989 was fortunate enough to be selected for the R. T. E. programme, "School around the Corner", hosted by Gerry Ryan. We feel that Barefield N. S. was selected because of their wide range of extracurricular activities available and the wonderful talent in the school. THE WORKS In October 1993, Barefield N. S. entered the Children's Television Quiz Programme "The Works". It is a very competitive quiz programme, which covers many subjects within the school curriculum. With Barefield National School's high standard of education, the competition was won with flying colours. GLOBE TROTTING CÉILÍ BANDS 2001 is a year to remember for our céilí bands. Due to the exceptional standard of music in our school, they have been invited to play in Toronto, Manchester and New York. |

Medical, Dental and Optical Examinations as undertaken by the Mid-Western Health Board. SCHOOL BOOKS The grant aiding of schoolbooks for necessitous children is also undertaken by the school. ATHLETICS/SPORTS DAY In addition to providing children with a wide experience of many team games, the school also endeavours to develop athletic skills by participating in cross-country running competitions and organising its own annual athletic day in which the children enjoy a wide variety of track, team relays and novelty events to suit all age groups and sporting talents. |

BOOK CLUBS All newly published books are brought to the notice of our pupils through the school's membership of the following book clubs:-
Each year, the school organises a Book Fair, which provides children of all reading abilities and of all ages an opportunity to purchase books, which are fictional and non-fictional. LIBRARIES Each classroom has a well-stocked library containing reference and storybooks. The school also has sets of encyclopediae for research and project purposes. MODERN TECHNOLOGY All pupils can avail of the latest Computer Equipment. On graduating from our school, our pupils are computer literate in computer software, programming and word processing. Other audio-visual equipment includes televisions, video and cassettes.The above are important teaching aids in the teachers' efforts to impart the curriculum in a stimulating and interesting manner. GYMNASTIC EQUIPMENT With the construction of the new school, the Department of Education & Science kindly granted the school modern gymnastic equipment. This equipment is of major benefit to the sporting development of the pupils. BASKETBALL/VOLLEYBALL COURT As well as having two pitches, the school also can provide its pupils with skills in games such as basketball and volleyball on its newly constructed court. HALL/GENERAL PURPOSE ROOM Our newly constructed hall provides us with a marvellous opportunity to provide indoor activities for our pupils. FUTURENET @ AMS TRAINING Our school benefits from the best in technology education by having qualified staff from Futurenet @ AMS Training teaching the latest in computer applications on a weekly basis.
