Comhaltas Ceoltòirì Èireann are the proud owners of the fine circular building opposite Our Lady's Hospital on the Gort Road in Ennis. It was first suggested back in the 1960's that Clare County Board of CCE should have a teach cheoil for its sole use. The money wasn't available at that time and the culture was nowhere near as vibrant then as it is today.

Frank Custy, Martin Byrnes and Larry Blake became involved in the pipe dream in the 70's and a site became available to them. Plans were drawn up for a multi-use facility. Finances dictated the plans as well and it was built for about £100,000. This was a lot of money in 1981 but still a reasonable amount.

1982 was the first year of operation despite the building in progress around you. It was officially opened on a wet and windy St.Patrick's Day in 1983 by Uachtarán an Chomhaltais, Jim McAuley from Kilkenny.

Many innovative ideas have borne fruit in Cois na hAbhna. Christy Moore played a few concerts there to packed capacity and many concerts and cèilithe have occurred over the past twenty years. Well known stalwarts such as the Kilfenora and Tulla bands are regular attractions.

Nowadays, the Archives are thriving under the auspices of Frank Whelan whose voluntary efforts are always diligent and consistent. CD's, videos, literature and new publications are available on a computer via Frank. This little teach Cheoil is responsible for multiple dancing, music and singing classes and gatherings. It is a powerhouse of culture as it was dreamed as a way back in the 1960's.

There is no bar on the premises to encourage the family atmosphere where ever possible. I hope the next twenty years of Cois na hAbhna are even half as fruitful as the last twenty.
