GREEN SCHOOLS GARDEN PROJECT

Children caring for the herb, flower and vegetable garden which they designedIntroduction
During the past year, Mr. Conroy, our fourth class teacher introduced our class to many interesting Subjects concerning the local and global environment. We loved exploring waste management, alternative energy sources, and the production of safe and healthy foods on our farms and the preservation of the environment. We studied local ponds and habitats, and produced models of the perfect ecological village.
But our greatest wish was to stop talking and to do!
As a class we thought of the idea of making our own school garden and of entering Clare County Councils tidy schools and garden programme. We were delighted with this idea and spent the months of May and June of this year at this work. This is our our story.
Design and Development
Mikey Fitzgerald, a retired man, and with a love for gardening came up one day with Marie
Roseingrave and Mary Ellen Twigge. They looked around the pitch for a suitable place for a garden. They decided on a rough piece of land on the left hand side of the gate. With their shovels and spades they set off to work. Mr. Conroy brought out the rotovator and rotovated the rough soil. On that very same day Simone Russell from a local garden centre in town, brought plants and herbs to help us kick start with the garden.
The children of fourth class planted over twenty plants and herbs, in one day. The children put down small rugged stones. The future pavment stones were put down by Kevin Cahir , Micheal Flanagan and Mr. Conroy and the children of fourth class.
We finally designed the garden into a vegetable patch herb patch and a wild flower patch .Seeds were brought in by Ciara Boylan ,Felicity Flanagan , Cathy Moynahan and Claire Roseingrave.Since then all children have worked in the garden.
Composter
Christopher Chan collected the composter from the Clare County Council. Now each class has a compost bin for their banana peels, apple core, etc.
After weeks of hard work, the garden is a peaceful place to be. |
Junior pupils propagate some plants, which are cared for by more senior pupils.
|
Children create their own compost for use in the organic garden.
Children also have plans for a water fountain. |

I only rest rest rest when the earth is clean, whoa, whoa!
I am working hard for a green flag, whoa, whoa!
And if we don't make it , oh, what a drag, whoa, whoa!
Verse 1:
Every Friday, I pick up the trash from here, and there, and everywhere, and my head, is spinning around and round, picking up garbage from the ground.
So, come on, please won't you, save the world from litter too,
Show the Ozone Layer that you care, whoa, whoa! Fossil fuels are earth killing tools, whoa, whoa!
Verse 2:
Plant things, from big to small, from bush to redwood tall. So every girl, and every boy, the earth is not a toy Cause I only…Repeat Chorus
