ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW


Rubbish can't escape

Our initial review was carried out in April 1999 and details are available in last years plan. The central findings were :

  1. that there was general carelessness regarding litter
  2. non-segregation of the ten bags of litter per week
  3. average monthly paper consumption was 7,300 sheets
  4. little recent planting in school environs

    Action Plan for 1999-2000 was devised and is available in last years submission to An Taisce and is on file at Barefield National School.

September 2000
  • Collate individual teacher plans for units referring to aspects of Green Schools programme.
  • Organise litter collection wardens for all classrooms.
October 2000
  • Pen Pal Project - keeping our neighbourhood clean. Indiana contact school.
  • Water Testing project with John Barron
  • Review and renew elements from last years project.
November 2000
  • Essay Competition - Fresh Air versus Mr. Pollution
December 2000
  • Minimising Waste - Discussions
  • Composting - resurrect this element of the programme
  • Classes based on Waste Disposal problems and proposed solutions.
January 2001
  • Waste Materials Reuse Competition. Class Competitions. Winners entry date Feb. 28th.
  • Resurrect Pupil Clean Teams.
February 2001
  • Contact Tom Harvey, Inagh Paper Recycling and resurrect last years programme which ran into storage problems after a wonderful success.
  • Visual Arts - Fibre & Fabric & Construction Sample Collection.
  • Bring one more teacher on board
  • Resurrect last years "Spring Clean Photos" and display
  • Contact S. Hornibrook & Michael Fitzgerald to meet with committee members - organise design competition for development of garden and murals.
March 2001
  • Follow up with Michael Fitzgerald, ongoing discussion and refinement.
  • Organise a "labour group" to monitor, record and refine garden project.
  • Produce outline plans for S. Hornibrook based on pupil competition. Collect paints to be recycled for use in mural project.
  • Cake Sale to fund Ml. Fitzgerald & S. Hornibrook.

May 1st. Major meeting of Green Schools Committee with representatives of Board of Management, Parents Council & key teachers to review and plan next two months.

Are we ready to apply for Green Schools Status?

  • Purchase of a composter and use collected compost in the garden.
  • Propagation and plans for planting in school garden, based on propagating experiments.
  • Write a Book Project - environmental elements for display at Education Centre.
  • Incentive scheme for can collection and newspaper collection - recording results.
June 2001
  • Nature walks and delivery of Lesson Plans on Green issues. Co-ordinator - Environmentalist Mr. Gordan d'Arcy
  • Open Day to display our years work.
