Halloween 2011

HALLOWEEN SAFETY
Halloween is in the air but Halloween can easily become “Helloween” when bonfires, firecrackers, and trick o’ treating are involved. As part of the S.P.H.E. curriculum, The Ennis Gardai and Ennis Fire Brigade visited all the classes in Barefield National School on Friday October 21st.The liaison Garda Officer for Barefield National School, Garda Nadine Keane and Garda Deirdre O’Doherty treated every child to a seat in the Garda car wearing a Garda uniform. There they tried out the sirens and other Garda car equipment. David Woods, Frank Gormely and Fireman Michael explained all aspects of fire fighting equipment using a fully equipped fire engine. A highlight was the opportunity to see the water hose in full flow in an enactment of a real fire fighting situation.
Afterwards the pupils of fifth and sixth class were shown a video of Halloween dangers and the Gardai and fire officers advised that the use of firecrackers without a Garda license is an offence. The children viewed photographs and footage of injuries which have occurred through the use of firecrackers. Old people, young people and animals can sometimes feel intimidated at Halloween so children must ensure that the festival is enjoyed in a responsible and caring fashion. Mr. Burns thanked the Garda officers and the Firemen for their time and advice and commented that they are friends who keep our communities safe.
